Review

One of the biggest shocks in TV land in 2015 came when unknown 22-year-old Georgina Campbell won the Bafta for leading actress, beating Sheridan Smith, Keeley Hawes and Sarah Lancashire.

The harrowing, hour-long drama, based on the true story of an abusive teenage relationship, passed largely under the radar when it first aired in 2014. A speedy repeat on BBC One put paid to that with critics and domestic violence charities praising its unflinching portrayal of a most unglamorous subject.

Campbell plays Ashley, a young woman subjected to four years of physical and emotional battering in a performance that is as understated as it is heartbreaking, and everything you’d expect from a Bafta winner.
