Shazam! Fury of the Gods

The first Shazam! (2019) was a surprise screwball entry in the DC movie universe, and this action-packed sequel is every bit as good. Having become superhero Shazam (Zachary Levi) in the first movie, teen orphan Billy Batson (Asher Angel) ended up recruiting the other kids in his foster home as superheroes, too. However, their amateurish attempts to become Philadelphia's foremost superteam are winning them no fans, as their activities cause extensive (and expensive) property damage. With the kids growing up and discovering new interests (the opposite sex, the same sex, jobs), Billy fears that his new family is falling apart. Meanwhile, a trio of vengeful Greek goddesses (Helen Mirren, Lucy Liu and Rachel Zegler) is out for revenge after breaking free from a millennia-long imprisonment. Full of heart, warmth and charm, this is a slight, frothy follow-up that is only occasionally overly sentimental. It's also very funny (a magical pen called Steve steals the show), and visually impressive, while Levi remains a lovable goofball of a hero.
