ARRIVING

Bobby (Jack Carroll)

When is Bobby arriving? December 2023.

Carla Barlow faces a dramatic festive season amid her marital issues, as a surprise arrival in the form of her secret nephew Bobby.

Britain's Got Talent alum Jack Carroll will play Bobby, the son of Carla's murderous half-brother Rob Donovan.

The character has been described as a "livewire" and "chip off the old block" who certainly can talk the talk and fancies himself as a womaniser.

Bobby soon makes life even more complicated for Carla and plans to stick around in Weatherfield.

Speaking about joining the cast of the longest-running British soap opera, Carroll said: “I’m delighted and honoured to be playing a part in the history of the cultural institution that is Coronation Street.

"I hope Bobby brings viewers a lot of laughs in the vein of some of the street’s classic comedy characters."

LEAVING

Peter Barlow (Chris Gascoyne)

When is Peter Barlow leaving? 26th December 2023.

Chris Gascoyne is set to depart his role as long-running character Peter Barlow in Coronation Street later this year.

The Corrie star will be on screen until the end of the year but will then be leaving the soap at a currently undetermined date. RadioTimes.com understands that Gascoyne will be an extended break from the role as he has before, with the door very much left open for his return.

Gascoyne is the seventh actor to have played Peter since the ITV soap started airing in 1965. He first played the role between 2000 and 2003, before returning in 2007 for a stint which lasted until 2014. He returned in 2016 and has been a regular on the soap ever since.

Gascoyne was cast earlier this year in a stage production of Peter Pan, playing Captain Hook at The Alban Arena over the Christmas and New Year period.

Executive producer Iain McCleod confirmed that Peter's exit would air as part of a two-hander episode focusing on the end of Peter and Carla's marriage.

Commenting on Peter's upcoming exit, MacLeod claimed it is "really brilliant and bittersweet and feels like Corrie at its very best".

He added: "We often think of Peter and Carla as a kind of Burton and Taylor of the cobbles, and we wanted to have this kind of grand scale, highly emotional, very nuanced, very realistic ending - which is, I think, what the writers achieved."

It is bound to be an emotional one!

Paul Foreman (Peter Ash)

When is Paul Foreman leaving? 2024.

Coronation Street favourite Paul Foreman will be killed-off later this year after the character is diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND).

The soap is working closely the MND Association on this storyline and will explore the impact of the diagnosis on Paul and his loved ones as his condition progresses.

MND is a fatal, rapidly progressing disease that affects the brain and spinal cord, attacking the nerves that control movement so muscles no longer work, often impacting the patient's senses such as sight, sound and feeling.

More like this

Actor Peter Ash said: "Paul is completely blindsided by the diagnosis and he decides to keep it from his family and friends as he tries to come to terms with the news.

"I knew very little about MND before embarking on the storyline and I am hugely grateful to the MND Association for all their help and support. For any actor playing a role which examines a real life issue or condition there comes a huge sense of responsibility and we are aware that some people watching this storyline are experiencing it in reality, it is their life.

"Awareness and education are really important. I have learned so much even in the short time I have been involved in this storyline. We hope Paul’s journey can make people more aware of the symptoms and what it is like for someone to live with MND."

The character will therefore die at the conclusion of the storyline.

RETURNING

Tommy Orpington (Matt Milburn)

When is Tommy Orpington returning? December 2023.

Football star Tommy Orpington will be returning to Coronation Street this December, once again played by Matt Milburn, and will have a bigger role than ever before.

Orpington, since leaving football, has made some bad business investments, and not the least of which was opening a Tommy Orpington-themed gourmet burger restaurant, which has been established on-screen," teases executive producer Iain MacLeod.

"Anyway, they've all gone belly up, his wife has left him, and he's now had to return to the trade he had when he was a non-league footballer, which is painter and decorator. And you'd think given all that he'd be quite miserable, but he's not at all.

"He's very accepting of his lot - [he] actually finds the act of painting or decorating quite zen, because no one's telling him what to do. So he's in a good place when we find him, but as I noted before, he's now single, and there will be one of our female characters that needs some decorating done, not a euphemism!

"So, yes, there's basically a story that evolves where this attractive, successful historically, man arrives into one of our female character's lives and upsets the apple cart in fairly spectacular fashion, shall we say."

Linda Hancock (Jacqueline Leonard)

Jacqueline Leonard as Linda Hancock

When is Linda Hancock returning? 2024.

Soap legend Jacqueline Leonard will return to her role as Joseph Brown's wealthy maternal grandmother in the New Year.

In a big new storyline for Joseph, MacLeod teased: "Joseph's issues culminate in him falling behind slightly at school, and then Joseph's Fairy Godmother turns up in the shape of Linda, his grandmother. And she, as is her want, rides in and decides that she's going to try and fix all this and starts throwing money at the situation, which puts Chesney and Gemma in this impossible quandary, which is they feel like by accepting financial help from Linda, they're kind of ceding control of Joseph's life a bit.

"But on the other side of it, they have to prioritise what's right for Joseph, who is actually having a hard time at the moment and probably could do with the support.

"It's going to be a long-runner for us, and I suppose the tease that I might give you is that we are taking the very original story played with Ken Barlow as our inspiration. So inspiration from this dates right back to 1960 in terms of what happens next, and it's all catalysed by Linda's arrival."

Bethany Platt (Lucy Fallon)

When is Bethany Platt returning? Late 2023.

Actress Lucy Fallon is reportedly set to return to Coronation Street as Bethany Platt in the coming months.

The star quit the soap three years ago and was last seen on-screen in the role in 202o, with Bethany moving to London for a new career opportunity, breaking the heart of an already-grieving Daniel Osbourne.

Fallon won acclaim for her performance as Bethany during a hard-hitting grooming and exploitation storyline.

Now the daughter of Sarah Barlow and granddaughter of Gail Platt is set to return to the soap this coming winter.

A source told The Sun: "Bosses reached out to her a few weeks ago about the possibility of coming back, and told her everything they’d planned for Bethany if she agreed.

"She discussed it with her boyfriend, and family, because she’s a mum now with a baby.

"Once they’d talked about childcare, and how best to juggle it all, she was able to say she’d love to return."

What will Bethany's return mean for mum Sarah? Plus, could the return of Bethany spell trouble for Daniel's upcoming nuptials to Daisy Midgeley?

RadioTimes.com has reached out to ITV for comment on this report.

Harvey Gaskell (Will Mellor)

When is Harvey Gaskell returning? 2024.

Will Mellor will be reprising his role as Coronation Street killer Harvey Gaskell early next year for a new story with brother Damon Hay (Ciaran Griffiths) - who is back from his break for revenge on Adam Barlow.

Executive producer Iain MacLeod teased: "Damon's revenge may start to take a backseat to his feelings for Sarah. But just in case you thought that that was going to be smooth running from now or plain sailing from there, Adam can't stand the idea that this guy's back and has got designs on Sarah.

"He decides in his mind that to protect Sarah, he might want rid of Damon, so as Damon's calming down, Adam's going in the other direction, and his plans to rid himself of Damon will see him pay a little visit to Damon's half-brother Harvey, because he's no fan of Damon's either - and they might form this unholy alliance..."

Fiz Dobbs (Jennie McAlpine)

When is Fiz Dobbs returning? 2023/2024.

Fiz Dobbs will be temporarily off of the cobbles as actress Jennie McAlpine has announced the wonderful news that she is expecting her third child with her husband Chris Farr.

"Alan [Halsall] was the first person I told," McAlpine told OK! Magazine. "I was thinking, 'I might not be feeling brilliant and if you bring any butter near me I might feel sick'. We've been busy, so he's really looked after me – and the bosses. They all know and they're all really happy. We might have to start hiding Fiz behind a washing basket again!"

It is unknown how long Fiz will be absent from the soap, but the character has left the cobbles to work in Norwick for six months.

However, we can expect her to stay in touch with her family back home while she is gone.
